What is Elbow Bursitis?

Understanding Elbow Bursitis

Elbow bursitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the bursae, which are small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion the bones and soft tissues around the elbow joint. This can specifically occur in the olecranon bursa at the tip of the elbow, as well as the biceps and triceps bursae.

Causes, Symptoms, and Diagnosis

The condition is commonly triggered by repetitive pressure or friction on the elbow, direct trauma such as a blow or fall, infection, or underlying medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or gout. Key symptoms include swelling, pain, and tenderness at the back or tip of the elbow. The skin in the affected area might also appear red and warm. Movement of the elbow can become painful or restricted. In cases involving infection (septic bursitis), individuals may experience fever, chills, and significant redness. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, and a doctor may aspirate fluid from the bursa for testing. Imaging tests might be used to exclude other potential issues.

Treatment and Prevention

Treatment aims to alleviate pain and inflammation, prevent complications like infection, and restore normal elbow function. Conservative approaches include rest, modifying activities, compression, ice therapy, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Physical therapy can help maintain the elbow’s range of motion. Interventional treatments may involve aspirating fluid from the bursa and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections to reduce inflammation. Preventing recurrence is crucial and can be achieved through elbow protection and modifying movements that put excessive pressure on the joint.
